Success & Style Tips for the Entrepreneurial Woman with Curves

Creating a Strong Plus Size Image

Whether you are meeting a new friend, going on a date, or networking in a business setting, it’s always in your best interest to put your best foot forward especially if you’re plus-sized.  This may not be an easy feat for the plus-sized business owner or even a plus-size business.

It seems like we forget to tell our peers that you must have thick-skin as a plus-size business owner. It’s not easy to admit it, but we judge a book by a cover all the time. In just a few nano-seconds, we make our own assessments of the people we interact with on a daily basis. To be honest, not everyone finds the curvy woman attractive and not every plus-size business owner is willing to put their face or should I say body on the line.  You can expect to get disrespectful comments, so be prepared to ignore or handle it with the utmost confidence.

Be confident in what you’re offering to your client, be confident in yourself as an entrepreneur, be confident in your marketing, be confident in your message, be confident in your customers.

Spotlighting yourself and your business requires a great amount of confidence & “shameless” attitude. It’s a risk not many are willing to take, but if you plan to run a profitable plus-size business, a confident image (both personal and professional) is key and very necessary.

In addition to creating a confident image, it’s important to reflect the image of your customers. This helps to solidify the customer-centric part of your business.  Your customers will instantly know who you serve because you’ve turned the mirror on them. You’re sending them a message that you know who they are, your business is designed for them, and you want to stay connected with them.

Social media has helped to make personal branding and business branding more one in the same. No one wants to deal with automated voice systems or press 9 to speak to the janitor’s manager anymore. So if you take the time to reach out to your customers and represent them, you’ll be well on your way to making a lasting impression. Think about it, we admire companies that unapologetically represents the full-figured community.

Many Brand Consultants and Image Stylists will tell you what clothes to wear in what networking environment. They’ll tell you to make sure your business cards match your website and your e-newsletter. Looks are important, but to be frank, if you don’t have confidence in who you are and what you’re offering…if you don’t have the guts to represent your customers, then it’s not a pretty image at all.

  1. I could not agree more that image is everything. One of the biggest mistakes that I see in the plus size business community is charging a premium price for a product or service and present it on a shabby spam looking blog or website.

If a person wants positive results they must be willing to put the time and effort into making their business as polished looking as possible.

    • I agree Glen, I tend to see more sites that are laced with ads or sites that don’t have a clear message or anything unique about them. There’s much to be learned…

  2. As a Plus Size Image Consultant & Coach, I concur totally. As business owners and entrepreneurs we forget how important our image plays a role in everything we do. We feel we are suppose to concentrate on the financial and operational side of our business only. This is so far from the truth.

We have to remember we are always on stage, and we may not be able to control how others perceive us, but we can control how we are presented.
